According to results posted by the UAW's main lawyer, union organizing passed with 73% of the vote, or 2,628 workers, in support for the UAW, according to the post. A total of 3,620, or roughly 84%, of the more than 4,300 eligible VW workers voted in the election, the union said. "In a historic victory, an overwhelming majority of Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, have voted to join the UAW," the union said in a release Friday night before official results were released by the NLRB. "While votes continue to be tallied, the outcome is clear: Volkswagen workers in Chattanooga are the first Southern autoworkers outside of the Big Three to win their union." VW confirmed the UAW's win in a release Friday night but offered little comment.

Fruits and vegetables grown on urban farms have on average six times the carbon footprint of produce from conventional farms, the study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Cities , found. Hawes said that produce grown on 17 out of the 73 urban farms his team studied across five countries had lower carbon footprints than produce from conventional farms. Rushdan also argued that urban farms are a much more sustainable use of land than commercial or industrial development. The letter also alluded to the structural problems that can prevent urban farms from being more permanent, including commercial development and barriers to landownership. "Our work does not lessen the many benefits that urban agriculture provides," Hawes said in an email.

DETROIT (AP) — The New York Knicks picked up some needed scoring punch Thursday, acquiring Alex Burks and Bojan Bogdanovic from the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks sent Quentin Grimes, Evan Fournier, Malachi Flynn, Ryan Arcidiacono and two second-round picks to the Pistons in the deal before the NBA's trade deadline. They found it in Burks, who played well in a previous stint for the Knicks, and Bogdanovic, a reliable outside shooter. Bogdanovic is averaging 20.2 points and shooting 41.5% from 3-point range. (AP) — Fans of the soulful sounds of Detroit’s Motown and Memphis’ Stax Records will be able to enjoy music from both brands in the same place if they watch and listen to a free, online show streaming during Black History Month in February. Registration has begun for “Stax Meets Motown,” which features musicians from Stax Music Academy playing hits from both of the influential soul and R&B music labels. “Think Glee meets Grease meets Fame meets Hairspray, all with classic 1960s soul music,” Stax said in the release. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Johnson informed teams he would not be leaving the Lions. One of the people familiar with the situation said the Washington brass is still meeting with Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Their 34-31 loss to San Francisco on Sunday paved the way for teams to hire Johnson or Glenn. It’s unclear if they’ll pivot to former Tennessee coach Mike Vrabel, their own offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy or someone else after missing out on the opportunity to hire Johnson.

According to Fain, workers at some nonunion plants, including the electric vehicle sales leader, Tesla, have contacted the UAW about joining the union, which hasn't even begun its organizing efforts. Fain declined to say which nonunion companies the UAW would target first. The union, Fain says, also will have to organize Detroit automakers' EV battery plants, which are joint ventures with South Korean companies. He noted the concessions the UAW agreed to in 2008 to help the automakers survive dire financial problems. This time, he said, union members negotiated for themselves but also won raises for nonunion workers in the South who would have received nothing without the UAW.

"After 39 days on strike, UAW members at Mack Trucks have voted by 93% to ratify their new contract with significant local improvements," the union said in a post on messaging platform X, previously known as Twitter. Mack Trucks said the new contract covered its employees at facilities in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida. Mack Trucks, which was bought by Volvo in 2000, is one of North America's largest makers of medium-duty and heavy-duty trucks.

☆ Auto strikes sink US manufacturing output in October

Manufacturing output fell 0.7% last month, the Federal Reserve said on Thursday. Excluding motor vehicles and parts, manufacturing production edged up 0.1%. Overall industrial production dropped 0.6% in October after edging up 0.1% in September. It is now eight-tenths of a percentage point below to its 1972–2022 average. The operating rate for the manufacturing sector slipped to 77.2% from 77.8% in the prior month and is one percentage point below its long-run average.
